Email your friends
Why email is a surprisingly good way to stay close with friends.
Email your friends
A small argument for a “slow internet” lane.
Why email works (with friends)
- It’s calm. No read receipts, no typing dots, no pressure to perform presence.
- It’s one place per thought. A message can hold the whole context without feeling weird.
- It remembers. Threads become a searchable shared history: plans, links, life updates.
- It’s not an app. You don’t need matching platforms, accounts, or “add me here” rituals.
- It respects time zones + busy seasons. Reply when you can is the default, not a snub.
What it beats
- DMs: great for coordination, bad for anything that needs a beginning/middle/end. Stuff gets buried.
- Physical mail: beautiful, but too slow + high-effort for everyday closeness.
